These books will allow students to understand differing perspectives of life and their connection to the world. They will give students the opportunity to read with a small group and discuss their reading. The different types of books allow for a wide range of student connection and ability. In my classroom the importance of language is shown through poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction. Students begin to see that the words they choose have meaning and relevance to them. They become attuned to nuance and shades of meaning as tools of communication. They learn to express themselves and their ideas in a variety of modes.
