My Students

When you were a kid, how did it feel when you performed on stage? The use of the 350 seat auditorium is miserable and embarrassing. The window drapes and stage curtains have deteriorated because they were installed in 1906. This the same year the school opened its doors to children!

The student population consists of nearly 400 children in grades Pre-K to 8th grade.

They receive free breakfast, lunch and an afternoon school snack. African-American students represent over 98% of the population with the last 2% of the children are Caucasian and Latino. For many students, they struggle academically, socially, and mentally. The school itself is situated in one of the highest crime areas of the city. The area is surrounded by vacant lots, boarded up homes, drug dealers, and gang bangers.

My Project

By securing a much needed face lift to the auditorium, the faculty would be able to infuse more arts integration in their curriculum for the students. The students would be able to perform plays, talent shows, fashion shows, and graduations throughout the year. The parents, staff, and ancillary after school programs will incorporate and expose students to dance, theater and other activities in a safe, healthy, and wholesome environment.

Securing the drapes and curtains will create a safe and healthy environment for our students to participate in the arts.

It will also provide beneficial activities for the students and community. The activities made available to the students will increase their self-esteem, self-worth, safety, and overall well-being. This includes improving their existence outside of the school walls by giving less time to the unsavory killers of dreams.
