Light Up Your Brain!

Help me give my students Squishy Circuits Kits to build models of the brain.

My Students

Last year was my first teaching middle school, after a long history of working with young children. Who knew I'd love these middle schoolers?

My principal says you either LOVE middle school or hate it.

I love it! My students are intense, powerful and opinionated. They are morphing from little kids to young adults before our eyes. My students are great kids; they also tend to get in a lot of trouble at school or need extra support in classes.

When were were in our brick and mortar school, we focused on building relationships with our students. We focused on their successes. We made breakfast together every day, offered a quiet place to do work or rest, and built a community where the students felt comfortable to be themselves. We miss them!

My Project

Understanding your brain is what's up! I took a weeklong class this summer to learn about how people learn, with a focus on brain function. We made model brains with Squishy Circuits Kits. As I was creating this brain out of playdo and electrical circuits, I kept thinking, MY STUDENTS WOULD LOVE THIS! We will deliver the kits to students' homes and work on them together over the internet.

Did you know that middle schoolers can tend a task for only ten minutes before they need a brain break.?

For example, take a beach ball and review vocabulary, do a mirror activity or engage them in a rhythm activity. These brain breaks give students a chance to process information, plus it's fun! And we all know that when learning is fun, we want to do more of it--I'm looking forward to more fun this year and to teaching and learning more about the brain!
