Life Cycles Come to Life with Live Caterpillars and Ladybugs!

Help me give my students 15 live butterfly larvae, a refill tube of ladybugs, and literature to study both animals' life cycles!

My Students

Our classroom provides a safe place for children to learn and explore. Roald Dahl said, "The more risks you allow children to take, the better they learn to take care of themselves."

My classroom is full of energized first graders, ready to move and learn.

They have high energy levels and are never lacking when it comes to participation. Our day consists of learning through cooperative learning, teamwork, whole group, and individual learning. I like to mix it up!

Our students are diverse and come from many backgrounds and ethnicities. All of our students participate in our school's free or reduced-price lunch program.

My Project

My project is to help get butterfly kits, a ladybug kit, and related literature to my first-grade classroom. This would give them the opportunity to witness how a butterfly grows and compare it to the life cycle of a ladybug. They will have a first-hand experience seeing how a caterpillar turns into a chrysalis. Then, they will have the chance to see a butterfly coming out of the chrysalis. Lastly, we will be able to release all creatures in our school garden.

Last year many students were fully remote and did not have the kindergarten experience of watching caterpillars grow and transform.

With your help, my super first graders will be able to explore metamorphosis by studying the life cycle of the butterfly and ladybug. We will have three weeks of lessons learning about the life cycles of many different animals. We will read books, watch videos, write in our science journals, create charts, and observe, observe, observe our insects growing. First grade is the perfect time to compare and contrast all the critters around them. Thank you in advance for providing this opportunity and excitement for learning for my first graders this spring.
