Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an urban school in Oklahoma City. Our elementary school has over 850 students in PreK through 6th grade. Over 80% of our students are English language learners. We are 100% free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a Title I school.

The library is the heart of the school, and our students love coming to the library to read, hear stories, and learn.

I am proud of the fact that many of my students say that "library day is their favorite day." Most of the students come to school from homes with limited resources. We have many foster children, children being raised by grandparents, and children with incarcerated parents. All these factors play a part in the low reading levels of our students and their lack of confidence in their academic ability. I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials and resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible. Our students are developing their love for reading and finding information.

My Project

As students enter the library, they rely on signage to help them find information and books they are interested in. This project will help update the current library signs with files from Teachers Pay Teachers and new ink for the color printer (also a Donors Choose gift). An engaging and colorful library can help students become more independent when utilizing this space. This ensures that the library is warm and inviting to all students and patrons who enter. Thank you for supporting public schools.
