Our 4th graders are talented and amazing children who come from a variety of backgrounds. They are a diverse group. Many students live in the inner city neighborhoods surrounding our schools. They often come from poverty and have experienced other disadvantages in their lives.
In spite of the challenges they face, our students are eager to learn and improve their learning abilities.
They are sometimes slow to gain independence in their reading and math. I want to begin to foster more independence and help them gain the confidence they need as strong readers and writers.
My Project
These materials will help me begin to build a leveled library for my 4th grade students. They need to have reading materials that are authentic and meaningful to them that are on their reading level. My classroom has many students that read at varying levels of difficulty.
Research has shown that students improve their reading abilities best by spending time reading texts on their level that interest them.
I want to provide my students what they need to become confident, independent, life long readers.
I have chosen a beginning set of Leveled books from Lakeshore that comes in labeled bins. These will be new books that will be a foundation for our leveled library.
