This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have the ability to go to Harvard Law, become an astronaut, open a small business or travel the world, however, statistics say they won't. Society tells them they can't. I tell them they can, and they will, on a daily basis, despite their neighborhood in East Baltimore and despite the fact that they attend a Title I school.
My students are creative, intelligent, curious and funny.
Unfortunately, they also deal with poverty, undernourishment, neglect and emotional disturbances. The neighborhood is riddled with corner stores, memorials of those murdered and gunshots. As a Title I school, we don't receive a lot of resources or funding, which means students and teachers make do with mediocre supplies. The teachers in my school are a dedicated team of professionals that have a common goal: help students succeed. You'll find most teachers arrive early and stay late to ensure that students are at least getting the best instruction they can get so they can go on to become the next president or a top fashion designer. We try to give them hope, and there's nothing more beautiful to see than a child that is hopeful.
My Project
Many of the books in my classroom are old and outdated. Coming from a second grade classroom, I do not have a lot of upper grade leveled books. The leveled non-fiction and fiction books I am requesting from Lakeshore are age appropriate and will meet the reading needs of my on-grade level students.
My students need high-interest leveled texts to help make reading more enjoyable and exciting.
I want to foster a love of reading in my students and believe the best way to do that is by getting books that are engaging and interesting to them. I am asking for both fiction and non-fiction texts to engage all readers in my classroom.
