Help me give my students a chance to understand the joy of reading. Everybody is different and reads successfully at different levels. These books range in reading difficulty from 2nd-8th grade and cover many genres.

My Students
All of the students who benefit from this project are enrolled in a special education language arts class. They come with struggles in reading, writing, or both and range from a pre-k level to 9th grade. Inevitability, most do not read regularly outside of school and are difficult to motivate to do so within the classroom. Over one third come from low income homes.
Even though my students may be separated by their peers in reading ability, everything else about them screams typical teenager.
A large portion of the population I serve are 12-15 year old boys. They play video games, throw footballs during lunch time, text underneath their desks, and talk about girls when they think I am not listening. When asked what they would read if they had to, they responded with graphic novels, fantasy, action, and sports. My smaller population of girls indicated that they too enjoy graphic novels and modern realistic novels.
My Project
Every year, special education teachers are faced with the same difficult problem. How do we appropriately serve a student who functions at a second grade level and one who functions at a ninth grade level during the same class period? These books are part of my solution to that problem.
By having an extensive classroom library with titles ranging from lower elementary levels to upper secondary levels, my students can read novels that are not too difficult for them and hopefully learn to enjoy reading.
Each month, my students are asked to read a novel within 50 points of his/her lexile level. Unfortunately, for the month of September, I did not have enough titles for students to choose from and some ended up having to read books that were either too easy or too difficult for them. These books will allow my students a wider selection to truly pick one they are interested at an appropriate level. Also, all books are on the "approved" list for my school district and cover many genres.
