Letters and Numbers and Shapes-Oh My!

Help me give my students individual sets of materials to learn letters and numbers in more engaging ways.

My Students

I work at a school that is in a low income area and consequently many of my students face challenges both at home and at school. Many students come to Kindergarten unable to speak English or severely lacking language skills. Most of my students did not attend preschool due to COVID-19 which means this is their first school experience. Likewise most of my students have come to me this year deficient in the pre-reading skills and number sense they need to access the curriculum of Kindergarten.

I have a fantastic class of 26 Kindergartners that are eager to learn and become readers, writers and mathematicians!

I want to provide the best environment for them that allows them to have new and positive experiences. I want them to love school and learning! I want these experiences to be fun, but at the same time teaching them what they need to know in order to be successful in school and in life.

My Project

My students have been isolated at home due to COVID for nearly half their young lives! They need the opportunity to interact with their peers, engage in new activities and have the supplies that allow them to stay safe at school. Having individual supplies for each student is costly so subsequently some activities enjoyed by previous groups of students have had to be avoided.

Play isn't just fun it is the work of children and it is the best way for students to master the many standards they are expected to meet in engaging ways.

The materials I am requesting will help engage my young scholars in activities to help them become readers, writers and mathematicians. We will use these materials individually and in small group settings. We will the materials in a variety of ways. Lego bricks can be used to create letters, words, show groups of objects, combine shapes to form larger shapes, or even build creatively and then write about it. The molding sand can also be used to stamp out letters and numbers. Students like to stamp out their name in sand and beam with pride when having finished this task. The tactile letters will help students feel the difference in the shape of letters especially for those that are still struggling to master this concept. The magna tiles will help students make words and practice number fluency while giving students the chance to build shapes at the same time. Young children benefit from hands-on activities and these materials will help facilitate that type of learning.
