My Project

I work in a small urban school nestled in a working-class neighborhood of our city. As a Speech Language Pathologist, I serve special education students and help them develop and strengthen their communication skills. The students on my caseload not only represent a diverse section of the our city, but they also come into my speech room with disorders ranging from autism, learning disabilities, phonological impairments to stuttering. Every week these students enter my room and are eager to talk and share what’s going on in their lives. They always put forth great effort even when communicating may be difficult for them.

Sometimes my students are unable to express themselves verbally so we use visuals to make schedules, adapted books, core communication boards, and hands-on practice activities that engage students and increase their participation.

Other students come into my room eager to talk and share but need support with comprehension and or using correct grammar. Other students know what they want to say but can't get the sounds out because they have phonological disorders. We take communication for granted when it comes easily to us, but for those who struggle it directly impacts their daily functioning. I would like to use these tools to create materials for my students as well as advance my own knowledge of treating speech sound disorders!
