Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am so so excited about this project of beautifully, diverse books, and I know that my students and their families will be excited, too! Have you ever noticed that Black History Month projects tend to highlight the same legends and heroes. Although we love those heroes, and never want to forget their contributions, sacrifice, and greatness; still we should teach about some lesser known individuals who have done wonders for our society.

This project is a special collection of books that share unique stories about Black legends, stories that go beyond the most well-known names and shine a light on less discussed stories that are of equal importance.

These books will be used in just a couple of weeks during our Black Parent Committee meeting for family literacy activities, and they’ll continue to live on in our classrooms through blended learning cooperative reading groups. The collection includes books for both younger readers and older readers, because all levels work with me in small groups throughout the day for reading intervention.

This collection is more than books on a shelf; it’s a great instrument to building reading skills in our reading intervention classroom, where students work in small groups to grow as confident readers. These stories will help build knowledge about Black history for all students, increase self-esteem, and surround our learners with affirming Black stories. This project is a powerful, engaging set of texts that will go directly into students’ hands, used as tools to support literacy development while celebrating brilliance and resilience of Black History.
