A special thanks to a donors from South Carolina, a donor from New Jersey, and The Compassion Project who generously gave to this project0bbringing it to life!\r\n\r\nThanks to you kind donors who contributed to this project, we have been able to conduct teacher-guided small reading groups using these texts help us go far beyond basic comprehension as students explore big ideas like identity, culture, and belonging. During our lively discussions, students have been learning to think deeply about characters' experiences, asking thoughtful questions, and building important skills like empathy, multiple perspectives, and respect. \r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is joyful, interactive, and full of meaningful connection. In addition to teacher-led groups, students work together in small groups to identify challenges characters face and come up with real ways to respond with kindness, inclusion, and problem-solving skills they are already beginning to carry into their everyday interactions. I've seen particular students light up when they recognize parts of their own culture or experiences in these stories, while others are excitedly discovering perspectives different from their own. Through reflection journals, group sharing, and even planning a school-wide compassion project, our students are growing not just as readers, but as thoughtful, caring individuals. \r\n\r\nAlso, we have been bringing reading to life with hands-on activities like empathy mapping and collaborative brainstorming, where students practice seeing the world through someone else's eyes and learn that understanding others starts with curiosity and an open heart. The chalk has become a favorite during outside learning time, where students practice writing their names, letters, and even drawing shapes and pictures. The parachute has been amazing for group activities, helping us build teamwork, cooperation, and listening skills in a fun and engaging way.\r\nOne special moment that stood out was when we used the parachute for a color recognition game. Each child had to run under the parachute when their color was called, and they were laughing, cheering, and encouraging one another the entire time.
