Did you know that there are many parallels between literacy and coding? Well there are certainly are such as, they both help to develop critical thinking and other skills. In fact, it's super perfect for project-based learning approach, which is why I am using the materials from this project build that bridge between literacy and coding in my after-school Minecraft Club.\r\n\r\nSome of older students have partnered with a few of the younger children in our after school program to read with them. I thought the books from this project were the perfect way to garner student interest. When the students saw different leveled books about Minecraft, gaming, coding, etc., they flipped! These are the types of books that they often see as reading material in their classrooms, in our school library, nor at home. \r\n\r\nEach pair shares a book that they picked to read together with the elder peer taking the lead to help the younger reader and discuss their understanding using the student friendly guided questions I have provided. After everyone has finished reading their books, I will have all pairs meet together as one large group to share about their book and what they learned. The students are truly engaged, and I love that for them. When I pull out the devices for gaming time, I know that will be icing on the cake. Your donations provided diverse and engaging financial literacy themed picture books that are helping my young students learn important skills like understanding what money is, how people earn it, and why saving matters. Stories like, \"Little Daymond Learns to Earn\" and \"The Money-Smart Mermaid\" make these ideas easy to understand by showing characters setting goals, making choices, and solving problems. These books give students real-life examples they can connect to, helping them build confidence and curiosity about how money works.\r\n\r\nIn our reading intervention classroom, students read together in small groups, talk about the story, and practice new vocabulary and comprehension skills with lots of support. Can you imagine how hard it is to get very young children to think of anyone other than themselves? I use this strategy at the beginning of my reading lessons because I can model fluenct reading, reading with expression, pre-teach unfamiliar vocabulary, and model strategies to pronounce tricky words, as well as hook the students' interest on the central idea we will be learning through the reading of a story to the whole group. \r\n\r\nThanks to this project, I was able to do a Read-Aloud with a new book from the collection of compassion themed books provided by this project called, \"A Walk with Vanessa.\" During such time, I asked listening comprehension questions to help students not only be more aware of the difficult experiences others are going through, but to have a heart and mind to want to help. Afterwards, students participated in a teacher-led online game to check for understanding. Additionally, students are building a checklist with a few goals about things they can do to help others that may have a difficult situation at this juncture in their lives. Students have been receiving emoji theme utensils as incentives for fully participating with smiley face pencils being a fan favorite.\r\n\r\nThis is an exciting project with a powerful message of caring for others, while building reading skills. These numbers are unfortunately low. Black & Latinx students make up my school's population and we as educators, community members, and so on want to see more students from these communities attend college and complete it with success. College education provides a greater chance for opportunities in their lives in the long run, so early exposure is key.\r\n\r\nWith that being said, it is critical that we plant a seed of knowledge about the benefits of college at a young age. Thankfully, we were successful at my school at organizing different colleges to come to our school to speak to 4th-8th grade students about college at our College and Career Day event. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to pass out college gear to some middle school students, college and career theme stickers to all students, really enhancing our promotion of college readiness. \r\n\r\nEvery student should have exposure to college readiness at an early age. Hopefully, all students will consider college when the time goes for those choices.
