My Students

I'm a Speech/Language Pathologist who works at a self-contained school in Carbon County Utah. My students range from ages 3 to 22. They are a fun and hard-working group of children and young adults who teach me new lessons every day. My students are cognitively and physically challenged. Meeting their unique and individual needs is as rewarding as it is daunting.

Providing therapy services to these complex students can be overwhelming but I choose to view it as an opportunity to flex my creative muscle and above all be innovative.

Each student differs in their ability to engage in activities whether it be due to physical limitations, issues with attention, sensory challenges, low cognitive abilities, or a combination of any of these. Engaging students in meaningful and purposeful activities while meeting their diverse needs is the priority.

My Project

Pushing speech therapy into the classroom has been a game-changer for my special needs students. Interacting in groups is one of the best ways to teach social skills while focusing on fun interactive activities that target vocabulary taken from a story. I'd like to provide the books used in language groups to every classroom.

Exposure to familiar materials across environments is crucial to learning in this time of uncertainty.

Students are dealing with the emotional upheaval of having sick family members, sick and absent educators, all while fighting illness themselves. They've lost a lot of the consistency that’s so important to their well-being. Putting these familiar materials into the classroom is one way to provide activities that anyone can pick up and read or work with students. This simple action may alleviate some of the stress and inconsistency they face every day.
