My 8th-grade students are from all seven school districts within our county and are placed in this alternative setting as a consequence for inappropriate behavior at their home schools. Academic ability levels range from below grade level to gifted, and each student responds differently to motivational strategies. They often feel isolated from their peers and believe the current situation will not improve over time.
What makes these students special is their ability to build a relationship with adults who care.
My students have an innate desire to please...we just have to give them what they need. I love working with students to determine where they are academically, and it makes a difference to them when instruction is personalized to meet their needs. What I love best is watching them continue to learn in a setting that removes distractions so they can focus on what’s most important-returning to their home schools better off than when they came to me.
My Project
Organization is the key to learning! My middle level students need to have the tools to be successful in math class. The 3-ring binders and lined note paper provide them with the foundation for setting up organized learning. The addition of colored paper helps highlight concepts and learning tasks, while the sticky notes and correction tape help with them with editing completed work.
Setting up functional notebooks will help my students become more confident in their mathematics learning, resulting in higher levels of performance in the classroom.
Giving them the tools they need while learning is key to their overall success.
