My Students

My team consists of 36 students with severe special needs grades 1-6. Their needs give them limitations in communication, behavior and social skills. They also struggle to learn basic academic skills.

Even though they have limited reading skills, we look for ways to expose them to books and science and social studies content.

We have found that Scholastics Let's Find Out, work well to provide our students with this experience. They come in a variety of topic and are very interesting to our students.

My Project

Our students are very curious about the world around them. They need experiences reading and talking our calendar events such as Thanksgiving, Civil Rights Day, and Valentines Day. They also need to learn about the weather, animals, and communities. Getting these subscriptions means that our students get four different opportunities each month to read about a variety of topics and they learn how to use books and the class discusses the topics. We are able to take the topics and add in math, arts, science and social studies to make complete units for our classes. Having these readers are very motivating for our students because at the end they are able to take them home and show their parents.
