The limitations of my students can be seen in students who have use of only a few sounds, to students who have a few words but do not have enough to communicate what they want or feel. Even with their limitations, my students are working on being able to identify colors, shapes, numbers, letters, words and solve math problems. For students who qualify, communication devices are provided for them. However, I have several students who do not qualify, but will benefit when using a basic talk button system. Other students are able to communicate using a few signs and we are working to teach them more. Even my students who are able to communicate with words will benefit from learning sign language. When verbal language is difficult, signs create a way for children to have more words than they would if they only used verbal communication.
