My Students

Our school is the CTE high school for Portland Public Schools. Our students get to rotate through six career majors during their ninth and tenth grades, then they choose a major to focus on during their last two years in high school. Majors include digital media, architecture, health occupations, automotive, electric, computers, and construction. Our students leave with two years of career training and readiness.

These students make up the most diverse school in our district with a unique racial/ethnic balance that allows each student to connect with students that are different.

These friendships and relationships make our school a unique place and keep our students in school! We have a graduation rate on par with the public schools with the highest per capita income.

Our students grow and change a lot during their four years, and they achieve and overcome hurdles to go on to higher education or career paths.

My Project

To provide continuity and review, teachers use warm-ups to engage their students. How much more fun would warm-ups be if students could draw their graphs and write their answers on their desks!?

Students engage their brains and bodies in remembering and thinking when they write and using colorful markers on their desks will engage them in this important learning task even more.

I hope to integrate this type of warm up in my biology and earth science classes to get students' attention and participation when we start class. Who wouldn't want to write on their desk?

Using markers instead of paper will also reduce the amount of paper used in the classroom. Often, time can be wasted getting materials out or looking for supplies. Having the markers available for all students to use will jumpstart each period into discussion of biology and earth science.
