Let's Bring The ELA Plant Unit into Our Kindergarten Classroom!

Help me give my students plant kits to learn how plants grow, while immersing themselves in our ELA Plant Unit.

My Students

I work in a New York City public school. My students are a diverse group of children. They are of different cultures and ethnicities. My students include English language learners and children with special needs. At the young age of five, they are ready to take in every bit of knowledge I can share with them. This is the very beginning of their school career. This precious time will shape their perception of what school means to them. I want them to eagerly come to school each morning with smiles on their faces and confidence in what they can accomplish.

The students in my school live in a neighborhood of hardworking families who still struggle at the poverty level.

I work with English language learners. Many of these students are new to the country. English is not their first language. They do not have the opportunity to speak English at home, as their families communicate in languages other than English. Some children do not see their families until the evening. They go to after-school programs so that their parents may spend their days working long hours to provide for the family.

My Project

My Kindergarten students will soon begin their new ELA Unit: "All About Plants". What better way to teach this, than to bring the plants into the classroom! My students will love to use these plant kits to learn first hand, how plants grow.

Growing and caring for plants will help my Kindergarten students feel responsible and proud, while they are learning the "All About Plants" ELA Unit.

I will also create vocabulary charts using the markers and Stand Up Charts. The Paint sticks will be used to create colorful flowers! Vines of ivy will decorate the classroom. I would like to make the ELA Plant Unit come to life in our very own classroom!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
