Wow! As I am asked to simplify my 10 outstanding kiddos in to two to three paragraphs, I am truly humbled by each and every one of them and their talents and love for learning.
What makes each and every single one of my students unique is their need for a specialized, diverse education, that draws on their strengths.
I have 10 students in my classroom, each with multiple disabilities that affect their educational performance (some who are medically fragile). I have the honor of working with related service providers (occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech/language pathologist, teacher for the visually impaired, adapted physical education teacher, and a teacher for the hearing impaired) to create a safe, appropriate and inclusive learning environment for each of the kids in my class.
My students will truly make your heart explode with their love for life and learning! They thrive off of a daily routine. Our daily routine includes sensory exploration and teaching self-regulation. All of my students benefit from a holistic approach, which requires a very creative educational team with endless energy and a multitude of resources!
Often times, my students are unable to attend assemblies and other functions at school due to the noise! I would love to provide my students with these awesome, educational experiences and for them to be included with the entire school population. These 6 headphones, 3 pressure vests, and vibrating pillow will do just that!
Imagine being immobilized with overwhelming noise and chaos, thus producing a "fight or flight" reaction several times a day; this is what my students experience quite often.
The headphones will block out noise that my students are very sensitive to. The pressure vests will help make my students feel secure and calm. The vibrating pillow will give my students stimulation and input to help them be still and present and alert in the moment.
I will be able to use these tools numerous times a day! I plan to use the tools: at lunch, at recess, during fire drills, on field trips, at assemblies, at concerts, at musicals, during lockdowns, during tornado drills, school dances, during specialty classes, and even during instructional time. These tools will allow my students to cope and adapt to activities that they need to be included in. Instead of focusing on covering their ears at musicals and being completely overwhelmed, they can focus on the bearable sound of the music and lights and actually enjoy the experience!
