My students are from New Orleans and attend a public school. At our school we have launched a period in the middle of the day for clubs, tutoring, and enrichment. This time is mostly student led and is everyone's favorite time of day. My students are leaders and this is the time of day is no exception. Students choose their flex block schedule based on their interests and needs.
Our students are so awesome, have many hidden talents, and love expressing themselves.
Students in Quilting Art are working hard to learn valuable sewing and mending skills that are no longer a part of the regular curriculum in many schools. Students that have mastered hand sewing, are beginning to work on a group quilt, with the goal of applying these skills to later individual projects. Students in the class are enjoying showcasing their creativity and culture through quilting and are consistently sharing that joy with others and encouraging they join our group.
These materials will allow us to expand our quilting knowledge and create more in depth projects. As we master our craft we plan on making quilts to donate to local hospitals and organizations. Having sewing machines with allow us to make larger quilts and more of them. Additionally, we need an iron to be able to press our seams and create a quality finished product. Currently, we are sewing entirely by hand.
Quilting as an art has allowed generations to tell the stories of the people who made them.
The young men and women I work with are enthusiastically learning to sew and are looking forward to expanding their skills so we can create our first quilt. Each member is making blocks that will be joined together to tell our story. We meet two hours a week and are already moving so quickly. I have no doubt that the addition of sewing machines, will allow us to finish many projects to share with our community. Student members have expressed a desire to create baby blankets for local NICUs and larger blankets for elderly patients.
