This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are as happy as you can get as second graders. They love to learn and explore! The majority of the students are English Learners. In order to give them every opportunity to access the language, they need to be introduced to material through multiple methods (such as hearing, seeing, touching, speaking, etc.) As children living in disadvantaged circumstances, they need every opportunity at learning that every other child receives. That means access to appropriate technologies and high-quality teaching.

My Project

Learning to read is a difficult task and the effects of Covid have made it even harder for our students. Many of our students have missed a lot of learning due to gaps in schooling, and they are working hard to make up for it! Having strong foundational alphabetic skills is crucial to learning to read. Because of virtual learning, many of our students missed manipulating letters, learning what they look like and what they sound like, and creating words physically.

Giving students a physical way of creating words will solidify phonetic principles.

We will use the magnetic alphabet to connect sounds to letters and use that to create words and sentences! The world of reading will be opened up to our students. We can then move from the concrete to abstract by having students write with markers on the dry erase boards.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
