My Students

I am the Speech-Language Pathologist at a Title I, low-income, high-poverty elementary school. I service students with a variety of disabilities from kindergarten through 5th grade. Many of my students struggle not only with communication in the classroom setting, but with peers, adults, and family members. Many of my Pre-K students have developmental delays that affect the way they learn and interact. As their Speech Pathologist, I want to be able to give them a comfortable place to be able to learn appropriate communication skills they need to be successful in and outside of the classroom.

Play therapy focused on whole language is the therapy approach that most of my younger students respond to.

All of my therapy materials, including toys, were lost in the recent flooding in Louisiana. Our special education department has limited resources to provide to our speech-language pathologists during a typical school year, so any help is greatly appreciated! I am passionate about what I do and want to see every single one of my students succeed to meet their goals this school year!

My Project

My students will use the games and puzzles to learn turn-taking and communication skills. These types of items are often used as motivators for children with special needs. With sustained attention, more learning can occur. Items like the storytelling puppets and Mrs. Potato Head will be used to provide speech services for students who may not respond to a traditional therapy approach. The color puzzle and farm animal puzzle will help the students learn pre-academic skills which will be vital as they move through their elementary school years.

The opportunities for learning are endless when engaged in play.

My students will use these items to play and learn age appropriate communication skills. Educational toys are often expensive. Your donation will help to rebuild my therapy materials and continue to meet the individual needs of students in our school.
