Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had a teacher that made you look forward to coming to school? It wasn't because she constantly passed out candy or gave extended recess. However every moment you spent in her class was a learning moment. I want to make sure that my scholars are enthused about learning in my class daily
I teach at an inner-city school in Charlotte, NC.
Currently, we have approximately 967 students. About 48% of our scholars are Hispanic, 45% are Black and the remaining 7% are either white or other ethnicities. Approximately 98% of our scholars are on free/reduce lunch. We have a lot of students who are either homeless, impoverished, or refugees from another country. Even though our scholars are at risk, they are a very bright bunch of students who don't allow their economic disadvantages hinder them from learning. We are a Title 1 school, but we don't have a vast amount of resources that most schools have. As a result, our test scores are not the best year after year. Therefore, my goal is to create a positive and nurturing classroom conducive to learning through the use of hands-on activities and advance technology.
My Project
I ordered language resources that relate to fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Since we have not met our Adequate Yearly Progress for our reading End of Grade Test in the past 6 years, I feel that students need to be taught reading using a different approach. We can ask students to get out a book and read, but if they cannot comprehend (ex: understand the author's purpose & identify cause & effect relationships in a story) what the author is writing about then reading becomes meaningless. Students tend to lose interest in reading because they perceive it to be boring. Therefore, I want to teach my scholars how to build stamina and a love for reading through reader's theater plays, interacting with stories and inquiry-based projects. I want my scholars to also reflect upon their learning in order to hold them accountable for their learning. I would like for my scholars to use the Flip Camera to record themselves acting out a scene in a book & reading poetry for a virtual poetry jam.
Your donation to my project will allow my scholars to see that reading is so critical.
Not only will my scholars see the high expectations that I have for them, but they will also see the high expectations that some special person outside the classroom has for them as well. Students will be one step closer to being successful in the classroom and in life. Through continuous support and encouragement, we can become their "Superman" and bring a positive change to the classroom of at-risk students.
