My Students
I teach in a suburban middle school where the poverty index is around 87%, meaning students do not always have the essentials to succeed in life. This makes my job as their teacher even more important. I believe that by empowering my students I am making a difference not only today, but for their futures of tomorrow.
The look in my student's eyes when they achieve a goal makes all efforts worth while.
My classroom instruction is made up of active learning through student leadership and collaboration. We spend a great deal of time on real-world problems and discussing potential solutions. The students embrace the empowerment they feel when put in charge of their own learning.
My Project
Research shows that students who listen to podcasts, news stories, and interviews become better at critical reading and thinking. My students love podcasts but work at different rates. My students are in need of headphones to listen to various media sources for our engaging lessons. The headphones will be a great resource since my students work at different rates. Many of them are bilingual making it necessary for them to listen to a podcast more than once.
Using mixed media in the contemporary classroom, brings excitement to learning.
Students feel very grown up listening to adult like media and form their own opinions about their world. They especially love TED talks, StoryCorps, and ChannelOne News.
