Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine the excitement for a four year old entering a classroom for the first time? The first area that catches their eye is the dramatic play area. I would love for them to be able to use this area to promote learning through their own play with costumes and other manipulatives.

Our classroom is a pre-k class on a small elementary campus.

Our children come from a diverse community. They have many skills and many challenges academic as well as economic. Some have been identified as special needs but have awesome potential. Our program is a language based program that works on developing the whole child and preparing them for Kindergarten. The children are eager to learn and to be challenged. They learn strong academic and social skills through a variety of activities.

My Project

The dramatic play area often becomes the most desired area in a pre-k classroom but it is only beneficial if they go in knowing they having a purpose. The children use their imagination to turn it into a restaurant or a hospital or whatever we are studying that week. It would be helpful for them to have the resources to make this area a learning and sharing environment full of language experiences. The ability to provide kitchen and construction tools, a high chair, plus community helper costumes such as a doctor, nurse, construction worker, and pilot will enhance this center and provide the children more opportunities for learning.

Because of the academic rigor in kindergarten, pre-k has become the children's last chance to be encouraged to play and use their imagination.

Learning through play is developmentally appropriate at this age. The interaction with other children teaches them strong language skills, the concept of sharing, and most importantly the value of using their imaginations. Remember, it isn't just play, it is learning!
