Learning Through Play, Dramatic Play in Young Fives
My students need a dramatic play center that is functional and educational. This includes community helper costumes, grocery store items, items to create vet/dr. offices.
"When we treat children's play as seriously as it deserves, we are helping them feel the joy that's to be found in the creative spirit. It's the things we play with and the people who help us play that make a great difference in our lives"- Fred Rogers
I teach 23 precious Young Five's (Pre-K) children in a Title 1 Michigan school.
A majority of the population in our building is eligible for free or reduced lunch. I am the only Young Five's teacher in my building and I use centers and thematic based learning to teach content standards.
My four and five year old students love to come to school to learn. Learning in my classroom comes from play and investigation. For many of my students, this is their first experience in a school setting and I thrive to help them obtain a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning."- Mr. Rogers
My Project
I am requesting dramatic play materials for my Young Five's classroom. I currently have some dramatic play furniture but I am lacking the materials for children to use their imaginations, manipulate, and play with. This will be my second year teaching Young Fives and these new play sets will foster social and emotional growth for my students.
While this type of play may seem frivolous to some, it is an integral part of the developmental learning process. Dramatic play allows children to develop skills in such areas as literacy, mathematics, and social studies.
Dramatic play facilitates progress in social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. These are all crucial for children to develop in Young Fives and become successful in not only their school career but in life.
Donations to this fund will allow my Young Five students access to necessary play materials for a fully functioning dramatic play center.
The children will have the opportunity to learn crucial social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills while enhancing language development that will help them not only in my class this year, but in their future academic endeavors.
