Help me give my students the materials to transform our classroom into rigorous and engaging learning environments by creating themed lessons catered to their interests and built on Common Core Standards.
I work at a fabulous school overlooking the beautiful Wasatch mountains in Utah. Our school is three years old, with new houses and wonderful families moving in frequently. This means our school community is growing and changing, with lots of new students coming in.
My first graders have only experienced school in the time of a pandemic; many of them having experienced distance learning, masks, and changes as their norm.
These kiddos have endured a lot of changes and stress in their first two years of school. My main goal is to provide them a warm, exciting, and magical learning experience while they are with me at school.
My Project
With the stress of an on-going pandemic, school needs to be a place students look forward to going - a place to get away from the stress of the world. Student relationships are the foundation of this. Knowing what students like and actively catering lessons to their interests is the best way to help them academically succeed.
I am committed to making sure my lessons are rigorous, but also provide the children with meaningful and fun learning opportunities that keep them on their toes and talking about their week for years to come.
One of the ways I love to do this is through classroom transformations. No, this isn't just CUTE! Classroom transformations are a great way to merge rigorous content you are already teaching with a fun theme that gets the kids excited about their learning. In the past, I have transformed my classroom into a construction site to work on sentence structure. We also did Glow Games where our room became glow in the dark to review for our middle of the year math assessments. Students not only mastered the content, but they had a great time. In a time where we are concerned about students performance because of the pandemic, students need fun ways to access grade-level content to help them achieve mastery.
For this project, I have asked for the materials to do 6 room transformations:
1. Detectives - Main idea and key details
2. Candy Land - Measurement and data
3. Safari - Phonics skill ew, ui, and oo, and also informational writing about animals
4. Pirates - Phonics sound 'ar' and maps
5. Pizzeria - Fractions/Halves and Fourths
6. Rock and Roll - 120th day of school
