5th grade is a crucial grade for young learners, because they have to begin applying all of the skills and strategies they have learned the past 6 years of their educational career. During the course of 5th grade, the content that needs to be learned moves at a fast pace and I want my students to have the opportunities to practice those skills in a fun and engaging way. After spending the morning in our Title I classroom, you would never guess that roughly 60% of the students are labeled “At Risk” and more than 85% are considered “Low Socioeconomic Status.”
My class of young scholars are the most diverse group of students a teacher will ever come in contact with.
My classroom of 75 represents ten different native languages and seven different countries. Our students come from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds and strive to reach high standards. My classroom contains a huge number of students who come from low income households and exposure is not something that comes around often to my students. This year I want to help my students retain more content by offering them flexible seating options during the academic day!
Each year it is my goal to make our room a second home to all of the students that I have. This includes building an environment that feels safe and comfortable for all to learn.
Just like everyone learns differently, each student has different needs when it comes to being comfortable while they actively participate in learning.
Our classroom is heading in the direction of Flexible Seating. It is a 21st Century learning strategy that allows students to focus and choose their space based on their style and needs while learning.
Each group of students will have their choice of seating, whether a stool or a soft cushioned bench, based on their needs and desires to obtain the maximum amount of knowledge during each subject area. Students will have the freedom to move and change groups according to their needs.
We all learn completely differently, and I strongly feel that flexible seating accommodates this notion. Thank you for your support and excitement! If students have the opportunity to move while learning, they will grow even more as learners! Go Fifth Grade!
