Many of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. Over 75% of the students in the rural school district are on free and/or reduced lunch. A good portion of the students, if they chose to, will be first generation college going students. This doesn't stop them from wanting to excel in the classroom. They come into the classroom eager to learn and are helpful to others around them.
The students should not be limited because of their backgrounds and lack of funding to the schools.
My students deserve to have access to equipment and supplies that students in other districts do, because of the higher revenue. When they see the packages come in from the donor's choose program it brings a new life/energy into the classroom. Knowing that there are people out in this world, that do not even know them, but can and value their education is just amazing.
My Project
The materials, pots, pans, electric hand mixers, bowls, and measuring utensils, that I am requesting are to replace the old donated items. Students are able to learn science through cooking with the food science class. Unfortunately, the items needed to have the students cook safely are limited. My students are in need of new cookware, so the old Teflon doesn't flake off into their food. They will also be in need of measuring utensils as the old plastic ones are cracked.
In this class students can get real life experience with skills they will need in the future, cooking!
With the busy life of electronics and the ease to pickup fast food, the skills of cooking are not happening as frequently as they used to. With an increase in obesity and diabetes, students will learn how to make healthy substitutions in recipes. But the measuring utensils are needed for this. Students will learn how to convert from teaspoons to tablespoons, calculate fat and calorie content in the food they are consuming.
Food science is an elective course, which means the students are choosing to be a part of this class. They want the experience to learn to cook healthy and these skills can be carried on through their entire lives.
