Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so much fun, love a challenge, enjoy art and occasionally a good joke and overall are the most persistent group of kids I have ever seen. Our school is located in Washington Heights, NYC. We are an inclusive, dual language (Spanish), progressive public school who strongly believe in equity. In our school we allow for hands on learning and independence and this helps my students become the creative leaders that they are. All of my students are unique and all of their different personalities and characteristics is what makes our classroom special and inclusive. My class has 22 students. There is a mix of General Ed. students and students who receive educational services to meet their needs and goals.
There is a sense of uncertainty these days as COVID-19 continues to take its toll on us, but worst of all, on our young children.
New York City public schools have become remote yet again due to the the rise in COVID-19. While we have just learned that we may be back in our school building on Dec. 7, we are uncertain of what the future holds for the students.
My Project
These materials will help my classroom team and I continue to do our job more seamlessly, especially because there have been so many changes and uncertainties this year. Most importantly it would help each and every one of our darling Kapoks have the basic materials they would need for their learning. This would help each student have everything they need to continue to learn from home. We are specially excited for these materials because our 2nd and 3rd graders absolutely love art and these materials would enhance that love for art. As we continue with our Anti-Racist Curriculum, the students have developed a deeper understanding of self identity while becoming caring and compassionate individuals. As we approach the end of the Fall semester, we will hold out traditional end of term project virtually. Children will present their findings through their art and their writing. These materials will go towards helping them with project as they continue to work from home.
