Our amazing school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My 8th graders are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from wonderful homes. Many of my students are diverse learners and the majority of them come from another country or are first-generation Americans. Many of them face challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite these obstacles, these young adults come into my classroom excited to learn and do their best each day.
Each one of these amazing kids has the potential to be successful. I hope to even the playing field for my students so they have all the tools they need to excel in school and life.
Novels bring us to places we've never even dreamed were possible. When students are able to choose their own novel based on their own interests, they are more likely to read. We all know that the more we read, the more we know. Every year, my goal is to teach my students to really learn to love reading and discussing different types of literature.
My students are becoming more autonomous in their learning, and I would like to expose them to to a variety of literature.
Student engagement is obvious through their discussion and written response on a book that they are interested in. I am hoping these books will help my students become better readers because they are able to choose what they read. We will complete projects using classroom iPads, such as iMovie and Book Creator. We will also have small group discussions which will focus on literary elements we will be learning in class.
I feel that the students can learn so much more when using a book they are interested in. I am hoping to see so many "Ah-Hah" moments from my students while using these novels.
