Learning Compassion through Books!

Help me give my students books to learn why compassion matters and a comfortable couch to sit on to further dive into these books and practice compassion with their peers.

My Project

We are requesting many books to use during our social-emotional learning time in kindergarten that will help students learn to see the world through the eyes of others. First, we will focus on what kindness is and why it is important within ourselves and then we will move towards understanding how we can empathize with how others are feeling. This is the ultimate goal! These read aloud books will spark great discussions and then students will be able to further deep dive into these books on a comfy couch in our classroom reading area.

We will have group discussions based on the topics covered in these books that cover showing and modeling compassion, having empathy, and showing kindness.

These discussions will be student-led led with the teacher providing guidance as needed and will give students all an opportunity to share how their choices can make a difference in others. We will also draw pictures of how we plan to work towards becoming more compassionate and will share these pictures with our classmates and other peers in our school.

I will measure student's success and understanding of these topics by listening to their ideas during group discussions, talking with students individually about how they plan to implement these new skills, and observing how they interact with peers during their everyday interactions! I can't wait to introduce students to this incredibly important topic that they will carry with them for a lifetime!
