Help me give my students the opportunity to self-regulate and get to know their own needs for learning. With tools like the moving chairs and comfy pillows, my kindergartners could listen to their bodies' needs for optimal learning.
My students are very diverse. We are an ICT classroom which means Integrated Co-Teaching. 40 percent of our students have special education needs ranging from learning and speech delays to autism spectrum disorder. In addition we service a homeless shelter in our community and service many children in emotional crisis. We are an inner city school in New York City and have students of all ethnic backgrounds. We have many students enroll as they are moving from countries all over the world and frequently know limited to no English and we immerse them in our ELL programs and enriching classroom environments. We even educate many diplomats' families serving at the United Nations.
My Project
Kindergartners are especially new at learning how to self-regulate and control their bodies and impulses. Sitting in a classroom to do their learning all day can be such a challenging task.
Flexible seating opportunities in my classroom would be a game changer for our classroom.
My 5 and 6 year old learners could learn to listen to the needs of their bodies in order to perform their best in school. For example, some students may prefer traditional tables and chairs. But many students could sustain tasks longer if they could swivel on their chair, work cozily in a nook on a pillow, or stretch out on the floor.
Help me let my students take control over parts of their learning life, and learn to love school! The welcoming nature of flexible seating will make learning in my room so much more enticing!
