Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve at a very diverse community in a city called Sunland/Tujunga. It's a predominantly middle to lower class population. I'm a math teacher at this high school and have been teaching for twelve years.
My students are like ice cream at Baskin Robbins; they come in all different forms and cultures.
Though the population is predominantly Hispanic, I also see Asian students, white students, black students, and Middle Eastern students. It is an honor to be their teacher.
There are difficulties that come with teaching this generation today. Creativity is important as is versatility. Every minute that I have in the classroom is important, and none of it is wasted; therefore, having access to reliable transportation, current technology, and some basic materials is crucial to their success. As supported as we are by our administration, budget issues run deep in schools across the country; my school is one of them.
My Project
Hello, donors. Our department has been hard at work to provide students with as many learning options as possible. We know that there is no substitute for learning in person with a teacher who can give and receive feedback immediately. Unfortunately, our current social and safety status does not allow us to have all our students present all the time. Many have gone to quarantines and are missing school with their illness or that of someone in the home.
Zoom has been an incredible tool, yet it doesn't allow students to have enough flexibility with their schedules.
Some have doctor appointments during class hours or other schedule conflicts.
To record, edit, and post-lesson videos, teachers have been spending many unnecessary hours in front of a computer, trying to create lesson videos in post-production. Rendering is one of the most time-consuming aspects of video editing, and, if there's yet, another change that needs to be made after the video has been rendered, it adds more hours to our days.
Upgrading our video cards is the single most effective method of cutting editing time and post-production by a significant amount. In addition, the quality of products that we could post for students to engage with will be priceless.
