My students need 2 sets of leveled books in Spanish to support our Latino Academy which focus on K and 1st grade Spanish literacy and parent/child reading strategies.
Parents, students, and teachers are working together to build Spanish literacy skills. We want our students to develop effective, consistent literacy skills that will be used at home and at school. One major goal is to instill in the students' parents the importance of reading and education.
Our students are Kindergarten and 1st grade native Spanish speakers who are at high risk of not meeting grade level standard in reading and math.
Without intentional, targeted instruction, our students will not be able to reduce the "opportunity gap" that occurs the instant they walk in the door. We are a neighborhood school with a diverse community. Our school has a global vision and our mission statement includes the phrase, "A World of Learners." World languages and cultures are a major focus at our school. We have Mandarin and Spanish dual immersion programs from K through grade 5.
We hope to instill the love of reading in our young students and empower them with the literacy skills to be successful for the rest of their lives. We plan on building our Spanish Literacy Library so families can take home targeted leveled reading materials and practice at home. The majority of our families do not have literacy resources at home. The local public library has a limited selection of primary grade reading books in Spanish. Our parents are taught strategies to develop comprehension skills and fluency techniques when working with their children, first during our in-school Latino Academy and second at home. Most importantly, the families will develop consistent learning habits that include the whole family and empower everyone to realize the dream of prosperity.
Because our library is so limited, we have to make paper copies of books for our students and parents.
These books are useful, but they quickly deteriorate and don't meet the educational standards expected from our students during the school day. These are new parents and new families to our school, and it's vital to convey the importance of education through the quality of our materials and the quality of our instruction.
