Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Did you know that children with language deficits are at a higher risk for reading and writing difficulties? Research shows that 20-28% of students with speech sound disorders (SSD) have literacy difficulties (Overby, Trainin, Smit, Bernthal, and Nelson, 2012), as well. Speech-Language Pathologists are important team members for aiding in the identification and prevention of reading and writing deficits.

In school, early identification and targeted supports are vital for access to the curriculum as well as for developing age appropriate literacy skills.

Speech-Language Pathologists often provide evidence based, multi-sensory reading and writing interventions to students across grade levels, whether during speech sessions or as an important part of Response to Intervention (RTI).

Having our own Test of Integrated Language and Literacy Skills will aid us in identifying language/literacy disorders, to document patterns of relative strengths and weaknesses, and to track changes in language and literacy skills over time.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
