My Project

Students in my German classes get to begin class every day with time for free reading. They choose a novel that is written at an appropriate level, as well as something that they're interested in reading. Having a wide range of books for students to choose from is the key to an effective free reading program. As my upper level students progress and read through my library, seeing new titles on the shelves brings a wave of excitement!

Reading for pleasure is the single most efficient way to acquire new vocabulary.

The time we spend reading in our German language class has a direct impact on my students' language acquisition. Providing fresh reading material throughout the year helps them continue to stay motivated to read! Some students tell me that the book they read in German is the first book they've read for fun since elementary school. Not only does our reading program help their German language skills, but also builds a strong literacy foundation for all content areas.
