Laminate It, Zip It, Learn It!

Help me give my students hands-on educational games and activities to use for reviewing previously taught skills in both phonics and math.

My Project

Our grade-level goal is to provide engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that reinforce and extend classroom instruction in both literacy and mathematics. To support this goal, we are requesting funding for laminators, laminating pouches, and zipper pouches to create, protect, and organize instructional center activities that can be used year after year in our first-grade classrooms.

The materials created through this grant will be used to reinforce and reteach essential phonics and math skills that have already been introduced during whole-group and small-group instruction.

Literacy skills addressed will include short and long vowels, r-controlled vowels, syllable types, digraphs, vowel teams, and other foundational reading concepts. Math activities will focus on measurement and data, money, telling time, geometry, addition and subtraction, problem-solving skills, and much more.

These reusable center activities will allow students to practice important concepts through games, partner work, and interactive learning experiences. In addition to strengthening academic skills, the centers will promote valuable social-emotional skills such as cooperation, teamwork, taking turns, respectful discussion, problem-solving, and encouraging peers.

Our school is a Title I school located in a low-income community. Many of our almost 80 students have limited access to educational games and hands-on learning experiences outside of school. As a result, it is important that we provide meaningful opportunities for active engagement within the classroom. Research shows that students learn best when they can manipulate materials, collaborate with others, and actively participate in their learning.

The requested laminators, laminating supplies, and zipper pouches will enable us to create organized and durable instructional resources that can be used for many years. These materials will maximize instructional time, support differentiated learning, and provide students with engaging opportunities to strengthen foundational literacy and math skills while building confidence and collaboration.
