Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in urban districts often have to walk to school in the morning. Bussing rules oftentimes call for students within a certain radius of the school building to walk to and from school. Many times, these students have to walk in the rain, cold, or snow if their parents are working in the mornings and cannot drop them off directly. One of my students informed me that her walk to school each morning is 45 minutes long! This is longer than my commute in each day! Students like her need help from teachers and staff to ensure they are warm enough to get to and from school, otherwise, sometimes they decide not to show up. If it were you, and you were faced with having to walk in the rain or snow to come to school without gloves or hats to keep you warm, would you bother to come?

This project requests yarn, needles, and other items for hand-crafting socks, hats, gloves, and scarves to give to students as a reward for good behavior, an incentive to work hard and achieve, or as support for those most in need.

Please consider supporting this project for students who need all the extra warmth they can get! I want to hand-make some items for my kids because this is a way to show them how much they are cared for. Hand-made items often last longer and will hopefully stay with students for many years as a reminder that their teacher is rooting for them!
