The kids are thrilled when they see on their schedules that they have Family Consumer Science (FCS) or, as some of us remember it, Home Economics. This is a class that is always full of enthusiastic students who want to learn the basics of cooking and nutrition.
Our school is located in a suburb of Chicago and has an over 50% poverty level.
The students are eager to learn and to experience new things. Many of the students have come here from other countries; some of them are running from bad situations and had to live in refugee camps as they made their way out of their country to come to America.
There are always more students who choose to be in this class than there are spaces for. The FCS classes are always full with a list of students who want to be in the class. We are a very diverse school community, and there are always so many different ideas brought into the classroom every trimester which encourages some very diverse conversations, different recipes and varying foods.
My Project
We have been using the same equipment for about 15 years, and some of the items just need to be upgraded and replaced. Dish towels and measuring equipment don't last that long when they are used 6 hours a day for the entire school year! We need flatware, stockpots, fry pans and other utensils and cooking supplies.
The new utensils and equipment will give a much needed boost to the 6 complete kitchens that are in my classroom.
So much of the equipment is just in need of some sprucing up. It's difficult to measure teaspoons and tablespoons accurately when you can no longer read the measurements that were originally on the handles because they have been washed away by years of cleaning.
The new equipment will be a much needed addition to the Family and Consumer Science classroom. In addition, the class sizes are getting larger and larger with each passing trimester, and more flatware and glasses will also round out the supplies.
