Help me give my students access to Kindles in the classroom for ebooks so that learning can be personalized and students can have the necessary accessibility features they need to comprehend the text.

My Students

The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school.

Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.

The typical student in my class reads at a fourth-grade level, with some students reading at a second-grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and writing skills.

The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a Title I neighborhood school. The majority of my students do not have computers at home, and some do not have access to the internet. My students go home each day and struggle to help their parents provide for their families.

My Project

My students need six Kindles so that they can access ebooks to make their learning more effective. Kindle ebooks enable students to use technology accessibility features to access a complex text in a comprehensible way!

For example, students can zoom in or out to read with the font at a comfortable size, change background colors to more easily access the text, use embedded dictionaries and thesaurus to make meaning of unknown words, listen to audio companions of a text, and MORE!

The majority of my students are English Language Learners and Special Education students who need access to these features to make meaning while reading complex text!

These Kindles will be used for book clubs, independent reading, and book sharing with my students. Ebooks are much more affordable at times than a paperback book for book clubs and having access to Kindles will help me with purchasing their book club texts throughout the year.
