Unfortunately, our school is a building that was built in 1912 and is severely over crowded. The students have to stay in their classrooms for most of the day, even during specials like art and music. My classroom has 33 students in it, so space is tight. Generally students are not allowed up out of their seats much at all during the day.\r\n\r\nWhen the students found out that games were donated for them to use, they were so excited. Uno is a favorite that they play consistently. Every time recess is indoors, all of the games are being used. Students are able to chat and take time away from their chromebooks, and sit with friends to socialize. I have seen the community in our classroom benefit from these interactions.\r\n\r\nThe laminator has also come in handy, as I am able to laminate things for bulletin boards so they don't get ruined. The cardboard dividers will help immensely with the overcrowding situation during state testing this month. As a teacher in a low income commnity, the value of these items is immesurable. My class is filled with well-deserving students! It can be difficult holding the attention of the students in the classroom, but Scholastic News captures their attention! The stories in the magazines are timely, and interesting. The articles provide deep discussions on current topics. So far, my students have learned more information about manatees, discussed whether schools should ban cell phones, discussed more about flag football, and had extended lessons on bullying. They look forward to receiving a new Scholastic magazine - excited to find out what the stories are in the issue. The digital components extend our learning, and engage the students to learn more.
