Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the teacher of 20 smart, kind, and curious Kindergarteners. We are a part of a public magnet school for world language with a unique approach. Not only do we have language class every day, but students are also exposed to a curriculum centered around global citizenship. It is never too early to learn about global citizenship and what it means to live in this changing world.
Despite 92% of our students living in low income households, my scholars come to school everyday ready to learn and eager for any opportunity that comes their way.
We especially love reading, playing outside, and our class mascot (Mr. Banana the stuffed monkey). Most of all, we love working together in our diverse classroom where everyone adds value to our community.
My Project
If you have ever met a five year old, you might doubt their ability to work and learn independently. That is not the case! However, in order to be independent, my young scholars need some extra support. Every day, my class has 35 minuets of center time for both math and literacy. These are the most crucial times of the day, because it is when I do small group instruction and provide intervention for struggling students. It is also when my students are learning to be independent, learning to work as a team, and practicing skills we learned the week prior.
Power Pens and Learning Cards will be used twice EVERYDAY in math and literacy.
This is a technology that is easy to use for students and excellent in providing immediate feedback. Students use the Learning Cards to answer questions or read text, then select answers using the Power Pens. These pens then "talk" back to the student indicating a correct or incorrect response.
Having immediate feedback will allow my students to work independently without needing my help and interrupting my small group time. I expect this to be a center that my students will want to visit over and over again. The Learning Cards and Power Pens are reusable and will continue to make an impact on students for many many years to come.
