I am a first year teacher at school with limited resources. Although I am bringing loads of enthusiasm, passion, and love for my students, I am not bringing the many supplies and resources necessary for my active kindergarteners to learn. My students need materials to enhance hands-on learning experiences. At our school, we have a no worksheet policy, which means we must supplement our curriculum with materials such as wiki sticks, white boards and dry erase markers, and play dough to enhance learning. One of the things we are learning in kindergarten is how to be a writer and author. While other grades may only require basic pencils and paper to write at school, kindergarteners need extra support. We require special primary paper as well as primary jumbo pencils for our students to get their ideas on paper. Unfortunately, these essential writing supports come at a high cost that most of our parents cannot afford. That is why I have requested Rainbow Scribblers (primary pencils), a pencil sharpener to sharpen the large pencils, and School Smart paper for my young scholars. Research has proven that using materials that allow students to create their own learning increases memory and academic success. In centers, my students learn about the week’s topic in a variety of ways. They may use play dough, wikki sticks, or a listening center on the computer to learn letters, sounds and words. In addition, through using hands on materials, students are more engaged and active in each lesson. Most importantly, I want to foster a love of learning in each and every student!
