I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that was unfortunately in the Hurricane Harvey impact zone. Our community received over 50 inches of water in about a 24 hour period. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning, which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
Last schoool year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80-90% of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible. I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation, they have seen in their little lives.
My Project
I am so excited to welcome my new group of Kindergartners this fall. After long days filled with learning, my students are often hungry. It is a long time between lunch and the end of the day.
I would love to be able to provide snacks for them when they get hungry in the afternoon, and believe me, they are hungry.
Having these snacks on hand will also allow me to offer a morning snack if someone comes in hungry in the morning. I love being able to have snacks on hand for my students. Research has proven that children whose needs are met can focus on learning. Students who have empty tummies cannot!
