I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that was unfortunately in the Hurricane Harvey impact zone. Our community received over 50 inches of water in about a 24 hour period. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning, which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
This year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80-90% of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible. I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation, they have seen in their little lives.
My Project
My students suffered the devestating effects of Hurricane Harvey at the beginning of the school year. Many of the homes in our area received water and many of my students are displaced even months later. Although they have struggled, they are resilient and have made an enormous amount of progress this school year.
They love telling stories and drawing pictures and I would like for them to be able to "publish" books.
I am requesting a binding machine and combs for binding illustrations and stories that my children create.
Having these materials in my classroom readily available would make it easy and quick for our class to make books both that we create as a whole and books that are created by students.
