Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students will create and manage a “Kindness and Calm Corner” designed to support our school community. With guidance, students will take leadership roles in helping maintain this calm space and modeling ways to support others who may be feeling upset, overwhelmed, or frustrated during the school day. Students will learn calming strategies such as deep breathing, listening to gentle sounds, and identifying emotions through books and emotion tools. They will practice using kind and supportive language, such as asking a peer if they need help calming down or inviting them to take a quiet break in the space.

Students will also help demonstrate how to use the materials in the calm corner.

They will read books about emotions with peers, use emotion plush toys to talk about different feelings, and guide classmates through simple calming activities. Through these experiences, students will learn empathy, kindness, and how to support others in positive ways. By taking an active role in this initiative, students will develop leadership skills while helping create a more caring and respectful environment at school.

The community we hope to serve is our school community. Many students experience big emotions during the school day and may not yet have the skills to calm themselves or express how they feel. This calm/kindness space will provide a supportive area where students can practice healthy ways to manage emotions and return to learning ready to succeed. Because this space will support students across the school, the whole school will benefit from this initiative.

These items will help students successfully create and lead this calm and kindness space. The flexible seating will create a comfortable area for students to sit and relax. The ocean drum/wrist bells will provide calming sounds to help students regulate their emotions and feel ready to learn again.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
