I instantly watched a sense of empowerment wash over their faces. I could see new ideas sparking in their eyes, and I witnessed their profound appreciation and complete understanding of what community is all about. While these 5th-grade student leaders won't be the direct beneficiaries of the pantry goods, they deeply felt the impact of their hard work.\r\n\r\nAlong with this letter, I have uploaded photos of my students opening the boxes, their handwritten thank-you cards, and groups of our leadership students proudly holding the thank-you banners they personally created for you.\r\n\r\nThis project has laid the foundation for something even bigger. I am currently awaiting support from DonorsChoose and other organizations to design our new dedicated space, the Anderson Care Commons. The smiles were immediate and genuine—some students were giggling, others were calmly waiting for their turn, and a few who typically struggle with new experiences were drawn in right away. It quickly became a meaningful part of our classroom routine, and my students now use the swing as a way to feel safe, calm, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThis resource has allowed me to provide something I wasn't able to offer before—consistent, in-class sensory regulation. My students are learning how to recognize when they need a break and are beginning to regulate themselves with support. Because of this, I am already seeing a noticeable difference in their ability to attend to tasks, participate in activities, and engage with the curriculum in a more meaningful way.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are continuing to build independence by incorporating the swing into our daily schedule with visuals and structured choices. My goal is for students to independently request and use the swing as a tool to support their learning. I saw this through their excitement to use their AAC devices to request and label the different animals and objects inside. They have enjoyed participating in mini sand scavenger hunts where they find specific objects and expand their vocabulary. They have strengthened their cause and effect and fine motor skills by using the small shovels and tongs provided. Above all, the sand and water has helped to regulate their bodies and prime them for learning through play.
