Ms. Patterson from Washington DC is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need to attend a literacy conference to help prepare my students for the 21st century by giving them a solid foundation of early literacy instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I've had the pleasure of teaching reading for over the last six years as a Reading Specialist. This year I made a transition back into the classroom to teach first grade literacy. What makes my classroom special? We are diverse and we celebrate our differences. My school is departmentalized which means I have two classes of first scholars. Some of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs) and have a wide variety of needs in their reading and writing instruction. Some students may read and write fluently in their native language while others will enter the classroom with little or no prior literacy instruction. It is my goal to provide all of my students with the very best of resources and educational experiences as possible despite his/her circumstances.
I believe this professional development will provide high yield instructional strategies that are simple to implement for all of my students. For example, I will learn strategies that I can implement during a guided reading session, shared reading, creating a high impact literacy workstation, writing, etc. These donations will not only help to improve my teaching style and active engagement strategies but will also help my students to dig deeper into their learning. This will allow students to have the maximum amount of practice, success & failure opportunities to become problem-solvers, strategic and proficient readers and writers and independent and confident students/adults.
