Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in a Spanish Immersion school where the students learn Math, Science, and Cultural Studies in Spanish. According to online school data the percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 30-34% which is lower than the Indiana state average of 49%. Minority enrollment is 93% of the student body (majority Hispanic). Over 80% get free or reduced-price lunches. They are a very caring group that look for ways to improve the school and help those around them. They have created a strong school community and are eager to learn and explore.

My students love using instruments and especially our piano keyboards.

I have been working throughout the last year to expand the number of working keyboards we have so that we have a class set to use for all K-6 students. We also go through Kleenex very quickly and the school provided tissue is not as nice as the Kleenex brand. My school also has cinderblock walls that make it difficult to hang things up. I have found that a hot glue gun works but a cordless rechargeable one would be much more convenient for all of the displays we do throughout the year.
